Hello wonderful people of comic vine! I shall be calculating the speed at which goku first ran the distance of the snake way.

I know this calc has probably been done before, but whatever

What is the snake way?

Snake Way, or Serpent Road, is a long, narrow, winding path, located in Other World, above Hell, which leads from King Yemma's palace to King Kai's Planet, and is the only method of getting to the latter (other than teleporting).

How long is the snake way?

It is stated to be 1 million kilometers or (1^9 meters)

The feat?

Goku travels the whole distance of the snake way.

He is shown both flying

And running

He is also shown to sleep every night

he finishes the journey after 6 months

Picollo says they have 6 more months in reference to the arrival of vegeta (who was meant to arrive a year after goku started the journey)

The Calc?

Now.. lets get straight to the point.

Goku travelled a distance of 10^9 meters within 6 months by flying/running.

He also spent time sleeping.

Lets assume he spends 8 hours a day sleeping (People sleep an average of 8 hours a day.),

thats 8/24 or one third of the journey is spent sleeping (two thirds is actually him traveling)

Time spent traveling = 2/3 * total seconds in 6 months

= 2/3 * 6 * 30 * 24 *3600 = 10368000.0 seconds

Speed = distance/time

= 10^9/10368000.0 m/s

= 96 m/s (approximately the speed of a Peregrine falcon)

Summary

Post-raditz goku has a peregrine falcon level travel speed.. Pretty neat!!!!!!!

Yeah travel speed for DB characters at the start of Z wasn't great. Their reactions, however, are a different story.

This is a good example of just how massively faster the combat speed of DBZ characters is, compared to their long distance travel speed.

This same goku was so fast he was invisible to guys like Kami, who was invisible to kid Goku, who was invisible to guys like Roshi, who was able to catch machine gun fire bullets and have an entire fight, a conversation, a spitting contest and play a game, all within a single second.

Yet this same Goku was still subsonic when traveling long distances.

Now consider that current DB characters like Gas are so fast they can fly across many galaxies within 20 minutes, you can only imagine how insanely fast their combat speed must be.

This part was always strange to me, since Saiyan Saga Goku's travel speed being subsonic considering some of the speeds shown in OG Dragon Ball feels like a head scratcher at the very least. Even for DBZ promptly before Snakeway, suppressed Piccolo could keep up with Nimbus. Perhaps an explanation for Snakeway to keep it even a little consistent with the story could be that the 1 million KM figure was admitted to just be a legend and this information may not be accurate since no one crossed it for millions of years but King Yemma.

The Namek Saga I remember also has some ridiculous speeds described for Krillin and Gohan that I think could be calculated to indicate they were flying slower than the calculations for OG DB characters and Goku running to or from King kai's planet.

In combat speed, BoZ Goku was massively faster than massively hypersonic characters, yet his long distance travel speed was subsonic. That shows us that the combat speed of DB characters is many thousands of times superior to their long distance travel speed, and considering how nowadays even their long distance travel speed is up in the trillions of times FTL, I would say that their combat speed must be pretty damn impressive.

No one is claiming that early DB characters transcended speed, or whatever. Their speed has been exponentially increasing, arc after arc.

Roshi was fast enough to have entire fight scene within one second, he exchanged punches and kicks, they were spiting on each other, then they spent some time thinking, than they had a short conversation, then they played a game etc. and Roshi did all this while he was still holding back. Normal people were unable to see their movements.

After being shot at, Roshi was able to turn around and catch 9 bullets.

Roshi moved his hand so fast it created a wind so strong it blowed away a 70-80kg heavy superhuman and smashed him into a wall.

Kid Goku (21. budokai) , and Namu who were both slower then Roshi were able to jump several km high in the air, a feat which requires a movement of legs much faster than the speed of sound.

Bora who was slower than Roshi was able to trow goku and yacharobe above clouds, which means he can move his hand faster than sound.

Tao Pai Pai was on pair with Roshi, or slightly faster, and he throw a stone pillar 2300 km away, a feat which proves hypersonic movement . (more precisely, the initial speed of that pillar must have been around mach 14, and he was faster than a pillar, so his speed must have been around mach 20. link and link , 2 links for you to check my words)

Then Goku drank mystic water and became many times faster than before.

Tien, who was on pair with Goku before he drank the water, was so slow he was unable to kick Drum, and Goku, after water, was so fast he speed blitzed him. He also became as fast as young king Piccolo, while before he was slower than even the old Piccolo.

Yet even this Goku, who speed-blitzed Drum, and was moving so fast Tien couldn't even see him, was still too slow to even touch mr Popo, and mr Popo was so fast Goku was unable to see his movements.

23rd budokai Goku was so fast that even Kami, who was vastly superior both to Mr Popo and kid Goku, was unable to see him or Piccolo while they were fighting at top speed.

Yet this same Goku, who was so fast Kami couldn't even see him, still had a sub sonic long distance travel speed.

Take a look at those scans, Goku starts flying extremely fast, but he couldn't hold that same speed for too long

That is not an impressive speed feat, and is definitely not close to mach speed

Catching a sub-machine gun bullets from that distance is not some impressive speed feat.

The one-pattern technique is just a martial arts technique. I don't think it has anything to do with his speed.

And that last one is not even a speed feat (also lmao at "superhuman" yamcha)

We don't know the timeframe it took them to jump. I'm interested how you came into the conclusion, it **had to be** "much faster than the speed of sound"

How does throwing something make your hand faster than sound?

This doesn't account for the height of the building tao was on, but i'll give you this.

so far, this is the only *actual* speed feat you've brought, and it's nowhere near the "much faster than sound" or "massively hypersonic" claim of yours

No offense, this is some bad scaling.

okay, so post-mystic water goku (who we don't know his speed) got faster than pre-mystic water goku (who we also don't know his speed), tien (who we also don't know his speed), and king piccolo (who .... we don't know his speed) ?.

and you're somehow trying to scale that to mr popo?

yes. goku got faster. but beyond that, these series of events mean nothing.

this argument hinges on the idea that kami was faster than popo (which I don't remember being stated), and the terrible scaling of mr popo, whose speed is not quantified in any way.

okay, so your argument is

- roshi (who is nowhere near mach speed) is slower than pre mystic water goku

- pre mystic water goku is (unquantifiably) slower than post mystic water goku

- mr popo is (unquantifably) faster than post mystic goku

- kami is faster than popo (this is probably not true)

- 23rd budokai goku is (unquantifibaly) faster than kami

All I see here is bad and unquantifiable scaling.

It's insane to just arrive at the conclusion that anyone here is "massively hypersonic" based on this.

Every evidence point to the fact that these characters are not that fast. You have yet to sufficiently demonstrated how their "combat speed" is somehow exponentially faster than the travel speed
