Who is more iconic right now: Thanos or SpongeBob?
@funeralmen: Mario sure but maybe not Sonic.
@ghostodoofus2: everyone’s free to have there own opinion to me and a lot of other people we like sonic more
Spongebob in a gigantic stomp of epic proportions. I wouldn't really say Thanos is iconic, hes just popular.
Spongebob and it's really not close.
@the_hajduk: is iron man more iconic than thanos still?
@jashro44: Hell yes. Iron Man is now up there with Hulk as a pop culture icon.
Iron Man and Hulk are A listers right after the big trio (Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man). No MCU characters are really as iconic as Hulk and Iron Man.
Maybe Thor is up there too just because he was a mythology character who some people actually worshipped.
@jashro44: You know Hulk is so iconic that he has become a household name. Hulk is casually referenced within society on a regular basis. Like when someone gets really mad or if you’re at the gym and someone is slamming those weights, you’ll often hear something like “whoa he’s Hulking out.”
The 70s Bill Bixby show is also casually referenced and homaged all the time, Bruce Banner walking away from the camera trying to hitchhike while that music plays is a big thing. It gets parodied a lot but it is also something people do in real life as a joke.
Hulk has infiltrated our pop culture and our zeitgeist in pretty massive ways, and this isn’t a recent thing, it’s been that way for many years. Iron Man in today’s age is more relevant than ever and he is now right up there with Hulk.
Thanos is most well known for becoming a meme so he is recognizable even to the casual audience. But he is not a part of our cultural mythology like Hulk, Iron Man, or Batman are. These characters are the new gods. Humans used to worship and reference Zeus and Hercules, now we have Hulk and Iron Man.
@the_hajduk: Well iron man only became popular 12 years ago. I think a lot of marvel super heroes are pretty popular now.
Andrea ocasio Cortez did the wakanda symbol when she went on her first interview with Stephen Colbert. I feel like thanos gets brought up a lot on talk shows now as well. They haven’t been that popular for as long as iron man but with how big infinity war and end game are I’m not sure it’s fading soon.
Personally I would put hulk above iron man. Hulk is known by my parents whereas if I asked them who iron man was they wouldn’t be able to tell me much I don’t think other than he is a super hero. With hulk I think they and other people in that age demographic could give me a bit more.
Not sure how spongebob compares to super heroes. I think everyone who grew up with sponge bob and at least they be if there parents know spongebob so he might have thanos beat. But I kind of wonder if thanos at this point is much less iconic than iron man.
@ghostodoofus2: Have there been a lot of great Thanos memes lately to compare to the great Spongebob?
Whether or not a character is Iconic cannot be determined at a particular point in time. An iconic status is created over time, as a character/person cements himself within a culture and pervades the cultural ethos. Whether or not Thanos is iconic can only be determined in the future. Popularity fades; being an icon is more long-lasting (see Superman)
