Lupus originally sought Professor Milo's aid in treating his severe migraines. Milo discovers the cause of Lupus' migraines is that the man had lycanthropy. Milo would use a serum derived from an Alaskan timber wolf to accelerate Lupus' condition, turning him into a full werewolf. Milo blackmailed Lupus, telling him he would have to kill Batman, who was an enemy of Milo, if he wanted the doctor to cure him. He fights Batman until he is struck by lightning and is presumed dead. In fact, Lupus had survived and went to to Alaska, hunting the wolves there in an attempt to find a cure for his condition. Later Lupus' sister, Angela, would require a bone marrow transplant. Batman sought out Lupus to aid his sister, but Lupus was content with his new life in Alaska and had no desire to leave. Batman eventually subdues him with the use of a silver net. After their return to Gotham, Batman promises Lupus that he'd find a way to cure him.

Returning under mysterious circumstances and cybernetically enhanced, Johnny waged a campaign of murder against his former band and their crew. He killed his employer by mistake when Batman dodged a sniper shot, he retreated after Batman when Batman proved to be a more dangerous opponent than expected. He doubled his fee and threatened his employers, killing many of their men in the process. The Agency sent an assassin to kill him, but Batman interrupted and Mekros killed the assassin before battling Batman in a store.

After "Iron-Hat" Ferris squealed on known gangsters Mitch and Heist, Specs decides to punish the stool pigeon by welding a medieval "mask of shame" around Ferris' head. Trapped behind the mask, Ferris can't go to his criminal associates, who would kill him, nor the police, who'd arrest him. Now a marked fugitive, he cracks under the strain and commits a series of "iron"-themed robberies.
Politician Henry Kendall makes much of this in his campaign to unseat the current District Attorney. Kendall later encounters Ferris in an ally way and attempts to manipulate the Man in the Iron Mask. After several more "iron" themed robberies Batman discovers that Kendall has kidnapped Ferris and taken on the Iron Mask persona because Ferris refused to help shame the DA. Still wearing the mask, Kendall runs from Batman and is struck by lightning. Kendall dies and Ferris' final fate is left unknown.
