Noticed no one is talking about this.

I just got this, and the initial impression is... Why didn't we get this along with Vol. 1?

The book picks up a few weeks after Vol. 1, Starfire is with Raven learning basic English while the others are hiding out in Seattle with no where to go and everything breaking down. Jericho is still in Slade and has taken control of him as they head off to see Niles Caulder.

Niles is a paraplegic nut thats only missing the tinfoil hat to complete the impression of what he is, and perhaps a swastika painted on his forehead to complete the creep factor he has. He despatches his Teen Titans to get the kids in Seattle and sends Slade/Jericho to New Mexico to get Starfire and Raven.

Raven is given a vision of Tamaran, why she fled and why she came to Raven. The fact is that Raven can shield Starfire from the aliens tracking her and given the explanation it was for the sake of the others safety that they aren't with them. The peace is shattered when Jericho/Slade has his Doom Patrol kick down the trailer door, but being unprepared for Starfire's raw power and Jericho being unable to take control of Raven and ends up trapped inside of her. For the sake of Joseph, Slade promises to help the two girls find the others, who has now been caught by the Titans: Wally West, Cassandra and Kole.

The creep-factor of Caulder becomes evident here along with the tinfoil hat when it's revealed he and his organization, along with the Titans, are out to topple the government. The Titans are a piece of work, basically they are living weapons, regard Caulder as their father and completely onboard with his ideas. Wally is the one in the lead, the most reserved and the one most sold on Caulder, Kole is the middle one and the least onboard with it all, and Cassandra being hot tempered and prone to violence. It gets worse when it becomes apparent Niles intends to do the same to Tara, Vic, Garfield and Tempest to add them to his Titans.

Slade, pretending to be Jericho, bluffs is way right into Caulders presence with a captive Koriand'r, only for her to break free and bring Raven to them in order to find and rescue the others. A minor fight breaks out between the Titans and the new arrivals before Raven and Starfire shows the three Titans the corpses of the dozens of failed attempts Caulder had before he managed the three. Wally gets no real explanation from Caulder other than another promise of greatness if they don't leave him, and help him stop Subject 8: Blackfire, a failed clone of Koriand'r.

The all of the Titans fight the monster, bringing it outside where Raven lets Jericho jump into the monster. Still lost on Caulders plans, Jericho continues the assault before Victor intervenes. Having been growing increasingly sicker before, loosing more and more of his feelings and senses, he has undergone a metamorphosis of a sort and is now in command of a huge exo-skeleton that is physically connected directly to him. Being unable to beat Cyborg like this, Jericho is confronted by his father hoping to make him see the truth, but Jericho opts to run away, collecting Niles before disappearing.

The Titans all gather in New Mexico, laying low in the indian reserve with many of them bonding while pondering what the future brings.

I very much like this book, the characters are strong and still identifiable with many of the traits we know them for despite how different many of them look. In regards to the new additions, the case is the same, Wally is his classic self, Cassandra might be more of her New 52 incarnation and Kole suffers from being stuck in the middle but has the clearest head. As said earlier, Caulder is a creepy mix of Charles Manson and a super-genius. Fans of Blackfire can always take solace in that the name actually refers to the project she was created in, the Blackfire site for the spaceship, and the Starfire facility for the only surviving alien. And before anyone asks, Wally and Cassandra are also results of mixing human DNA with that of Starfire's and the only exception out of all them is Raven... so I wouldn't get any hopes up about Wonder Woman or Barry Allen showing up later on.

Art is... actually better than in Vol. 1 to be honest. It's less cartoony and with less exaggerated features and expressions, if a little more jittery. Book still suffers from Brad Anderson's colors not being as vibrant as I'd like.

Biggest complaint however is the one I mentioned at the start: Vol. 1 really ended in a place where it shouldn't have... where we just wanted to keep reading, and here we are two years later before we get the real payoff. I mean fair enough if they weren't sure if it would work, but I would really have preferred if 1 and 2 had been released together.
