plogty's Batman #1 - The Legend of the Batman: Who He Is and How He Came To Be; The Joker review

A must-read for Batman enthusiasts, but...

It's fascinating to explore the origins of a beloved character. Many of the characters and ideas introduced in this issue became cornerstones of Batman's mythology, and the fact that they persist to this day is something to marvel at. However, in other ways, this Batman is a stranger, because one of his core, ethical and moral principles has not yet been established (i.e., this Batman injures people severely with little concern, and sometimes kills). This first issue is stylized, obviously, and it's a product of its age. It's somewhat difficult to read, and for those who grew up reading modern comic books, it might not be that enjoyable. Comic books, like any other form of art, have to be understood in the context of the time in which they were created, though. So, even if this first issue isn't fantastic story-telling, it's still important and deserving of your time.

Possibly the Greatest Comic Book of the Golden Age 0

In the spring of 1940, less than a year after his first appearance in Detective Comics, Batman finally got his own comic. And what a first issue it was! In this one issue was a re-telling of Batman's origin, the return of his nemesis Hugo Strange, the first (and second) appearance of the Joker, and the first appearance of Catwoman! That's a lot of bang for your buck - or your 10¢, as the case may have been. The Legend of the Batman - Who He Is and How He Came To Be, is a brief, flawless, two pa...
