Poll Is the Joker more evil than the Devil in the DC Universe? (44 votes)

Yes 61%
No 39%

As far as I know, in DC the Joker is 100% a bad guy but the devil himself, Lucifer Morningstar, isn't so black and white and is more neutral unlike he is portrayed in Abrahamic religions.

More evil than the DC devil? Probably. Joker's one of the only "pure evil" villains who is an all time great.

Devil in religion? Heck no.

Would you personally consider Palpatine there as well if i may ask?

Not familiar enough with the character of Palpatine. Though Darth Vader is indisputably an all time great, so if Palpatine's up there too, go Star Wars lol

@cocacolaman: Religion devil is meant to be the origin of evil I believe, I'm not religious at all but yeah you can't top the source of evil itself. Pretty ironic that Lucifer was once God's most loyal and trusted angel.

LOL no. Joker is just a product of societal neglect. The most evil in DC is probably True Form Darkseid

The Joker is a very particular kind of evil.

Chaos personified. Senseless death and destruction.

He’s sort of the ultimate Nihilist, to him nothing matters, and the fact that nothing matters is the greatest joke of all.

In DC he’s probably second only to Darkseid.

Not at all.

Lucifer Morningstar was in charge of running Hell for over 10 billion years. He is responsible for more pain and suffering than just about any DC supervillain, even Darkseid. Having noble traits to his personality doesn't make Lucifer less evil, as he really doesn't have much in the way of conscience or compassion (at least when it comes to humans).

More evil than the DC devil? Probably. Joker's one of the only "pure evil" villains who is an all time great.

Devil in religion? Heck no.

I realize that this is an old comment, but how is the devil in religion more evil than the Joker? He barely appears throughout the Bible, and "only" kills 10 people directly. This makes him far more evil than the average person to be sure, but still nowhere near the worst of humanity.

Lucifer wasn't really evil. He just didn't give a crap about pretty much anything except himself.

Joker is pretty up there, and is an all-time villain in modern fiction, but I wouldn’t say he out ranks Lucifer Morningstar/Satan/The Devil in this category at all

@mazahs117: I've been under the impression that DC's interpretation of the devil is that of an antihero, morally ambiguous but not outright evil.

No. Joker can't be worse than Lucifer.

Lucifer Morningstar is the embodiment of darkness. The concept of evil and everything bad comes from him. He is the opposite of the Presence.

@ghostodoofus2: yeah I believe that’s how he’s written or depicted to be, especially Gaiman’s version. I know he plays up the “I don’t make anybody do anything/life is a game of choices/POV” schtick, but as ruler of Hell he still oversaw a realm for eons that committed unspeakable torment. So his level and length of evil imho runs deeper than how Joker usually is depicted. To your point tho, it’s one of these things where two things can be true, he’s anti-hero-ish yes, but either directly or indirectly evil nonetheless.

@last0fth3risen: The devil in older religions seeks to destroy humanity.

There are many demons and evil gods in older religions, but "The Devil", being a fallen angel in rebellion against God, is a uniquely Abrahamic concept afaik. The word devil is translated from the Greek "diabolos" (slanderer), and is first used to denote a specific entity in the New Testament, which was originally written in Greek. This devil doesn't come off as wanting to destroy humanity at all, and is even depicted as trying to save it from the Apocalypse in Revelation (though, of course, his actions there are narratively condemned). For allegedly the most evil being in the world, the Biblical Satan is shockingly grey.

Your statement is accurate with regards to Islam however. The Islamic devil is much more overtly evil, being responsible for Cain's murder of Abel, tribal wars, and the emergence of paganism and human sacrifice. He alao has a clearly stated motivation of wanting to take as many humans as possible to hell with him.

@last0fth3risen: The devil in older religions seeks to destroy humanity.

Well no... in older mythology, Enlil, the chief skygod (who also demanded to be worshipped as the only god) is the one who tried to destroy humanity in a flood. Meanwhile Enki, the more serpentine, trickster, water, and fertility god, is the one who whispered to Noah and warned him to build the arc.

My version of Joker isn’t necessarily evil. He is extremely mentally ill. My favorite version of Joker is from the Telltale game.

@smith5432890: I mean, God is the one who set up such a place in the first place, so God would be “more evil than Joker” under that logic as well.

Not to mention your reasoning here, is based on capability, not intent. Joker would absolutely torture an entire realm’s worth of people, if he had the god-like power to do so, and he’d do it to innocent people as well.

Furthermore, Lucifer is not a human. He embodies human flaws, and can’t be completely divorced by human morality; but he’s different enough that we can‘t really hold him to the same standards.

An immortal godlike being is just never going to value human life the way a mortal would, and it’s unreasonable to expect them to.

Joker.

To break it down it's one thing to not care or be unable to really have empathy etc. Kinda like when a human accidentally (or purposely) steps on a ant. Yea we feel bad but it's not life ruining we move on in minutes. To the ants we are probably evil gods that care nothing as we destroy their homes and exterminate them.

That's DC devil.

Joker is far more evil. He takes pleasure in that. That's the difference. He purposely does the things he does even if he is chaotic evil. You can always bargain with the devil. You can't bargain with joker.

In the DC Universe, comparing the Joker to the Devil in terms of evil is a complex and subjective matter. The Joker is a fictional character created by DC Comics, primarily known for his sadistic and chaotic nature. He commits horrific acts of violence and has a profound disregard for human life. However, he is still a human character with a psychological background, making his evil deeds a product of his own choices.

On the other hand, the Devil, often represented by characters like Lucifer Morningstar, is typically portrayed as a supernatural, malevolent entity in the DC Universe. The Devil is associated with larger themes of temptation, sin, and cosmic evil. The level of evil attributed to the Devil in various DC storylines can vary greatly.

Ultimately, it's challenging to directly compare these two entities, as they exist in different contexts within the DC Universe. The Joker represents a more personal, human evil, while the Devil embodies a more abstract, metaphysical evil. It comes down to individual interpretations and storylines within the comics.

Posting different versions of Joker can provide insight into the character's complexity, showcasing that not all iterations depict him as purely evil. Thanks for sharing this perspective!

What Arkham Joker did to those toddlers in lore was the most sickening act of evil I’ve ever read in fictional media.
