RTs: Espada Series #1 Coyote Starrk

Coyote Starrk, The Primera Espada

No Caption Provided

Why do I have to fight with such a strong guy? I envied the weak ones. The souls of everyone in our group of friends wasted away and disappeared just from being around us. From loneliness we divided our soul in two. We don't know which was the original, or maybe it was neither of us. It's just that there was no other way to escape from the loneliness. I envied the weak ones. If you're weak, then you can gather in as large a group as you want. I want to become weak and if that's not possible, then I at least want to make friends that are as strong as me." (Starrk, Chapter 374)

General Terms:

In case you aren't all that familiar with Bleach, these are some helpful terms for you to help with your understanding:

  • Reiryoku: A source of power aligned with the spiritual sensitivity and willpower of the user. Every spiritual being and every Human has a certain amount of Reiryoku. If this amount is higher than a certain degree, it grants the person superhuman abilities.

  • Reiatsu: The physical force/pressure that a person’s Reiryoku creates when released. A battle between Bleach characters is a battle of Reiatsu.

  • Reishi: Spirit particles, it is the material that makes up souls and spiritual matter. Hueco Mundo, Soul Society, and beings that live in them are entirely made up of Reishi. It is also a source of energy used by Quincy for their weapons, arrows, and abilities like Blut.

  • Resurrección: returns the essence of an Arrancar's offensive Hollow abilities to their humanoid bodies. Essentially their form of Bankai
  • Sonído: is a high-speed movement technique of the Arrancar. It is equivalent to the Shinigami's Shunpo and the Quincy's Hirenkyaku, which are roughly equal in terms of speed.
  • Descorrer: is a technique used by Arrancar to travel between Hueco Mundo and the World of the Living.

"I'm not alone. I'm not alone. I'm not alone any more..." (Starrk to Lillynette, Chapter 375)

(Taken from the Bleach Wiki)

Coyote Starrk is an Arrancar and the Primera (1st) Espada in Sōsuke Aizen's army, along with his other half, Lilynette Gingerbuck.

Starrk has blue-gray eyes and wavy, dark brown hair, which ends at the base of his neck, is always unkempt, and is parted down the middle. He has a faded goatee. His clothing is typical of an Arrancar: he wears a white jacket outlined in black, though altered with the collar upturned. A black sash is worn in a manner similar to a matador around his waist and he wears white gloves. The remains of his Hollow mask consist of a fanged bottom jaw which is positioned along his neck. His Hollow hole is on his sternum, right below the tip of his mask. His Espada tattoo is featured on the back of his left hand, which he conceals with his glove.

Starrk is a lazy and unenthusiastic man who spends much of his time asleep, and no one, except Lilynette Gingerbuck, his other half, appears to try and stop him from doing so.Despite being the highest-ranking Espada, he is not eager to take a leadership role, allowing Baraggan Louisenbairn to take over at the battle of the Fake Karakura Town. He is not particularly interested in whatever is going on around him, though he is observant and a capable analyst. Unlike many of the Espada, he is not inherently violent or overly arrogant.

Prior to meeting Aizen, Starrk hated the loneliness he felt in the world but often could not avoid it because his mere presence killed off others around him. He envied the weak and wanted to be like them because they could travel in groups. Eventually he felt so lonely that he divided his soul into two separate beings to escape his solitude. From there he continued to search for friends until he met Aizen. Despite having gained many comrades after joining Aizen, he rarely directly addresses any of them other than Lilynette.

"Like I said, this ain't my thing. Let's just forget it. It's not like Aizen-sama feels like lending us a hand either. Those guys are strong. I get that already. No point fighting when it's just gonna mean more dying. So can we just go home and sleep now?" (Starrk to Lillynette, Chapter 372)

Starrk possesses the typical abilities of spiritual beings in Bleach as well as an Hollow & Arrancar, along with a few unique to himself. While having no special properties, Starrk wields a standard-sized katana. He uses it as a weapon in his pre-released state to make up for not having a standard Zanpakutō. It sports a pewter-colored rectangular guard, with small protrusions on each corner, and a sun-like design wrapped around the hilt's collar. The hilt itself is a yellow color, and the sheath is a metallic-gold color.

Starrk's Abilities:

Links lead to showings of Starrk's abilities. Recommended Reading: Chapter 313-315, 359-375

Soul-Separation: Starrk has the unique ability to separate his soul due to his immense spiritual energy. His spiritual energy splits and turns itself into another being, which reacts to his spiritual signature.

Master Swordsman:Starrk has demonstrated tremendous skill in swordsmanship, fighting on even ground with Shunsui Kyōraku - one of the most proficient swordsmen in all of Soul Society - and landing a few minor cuts without fully trying (though Shunsui was also holding back). In their final fight, Starrk is also very skilled in dual-wielding swordsmanship using Colmillo, to fight against Shunsui with his released Zanpakutō.

Master Marksman: Starrk is quite skilled with his pistols when released. He can fire very precise Ceros while fighting more than one opponent, and can launch a continuous barrage of Ceros which even captain-class fighters have difficulty avoiding. He skillfully used them to block at close range against Love Aikawa.

Sonído Master: Starrk's skill and speed in Sonído is so great, it seems as though he possesses a form of teleportation, simply appearing solidly instead of shimmering for a second like other Sonído users. He avoided both Kenpachi Zaraki and Ichigo Kurosaki in order to recapture Orihime Inoue, returning her to Sōsuke Aizen within an instant. His proficiency with Sonído allows him to create multiple after-images of himself to confuse the enemy. He surprised Jūshirō Ukitake by appearing next to him after dodging an attack faster than his own post-release Cero. He also evaded various attacks by the Visored Love and Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi, along with attacks from Shunsui while fighting them.

Immense Spiritual Power:As one of the strongest Espada, Starrk possesses tremendous spiritual power. Starrk is forbidden to release his Zanpakutō inside of Las Noches because such a release could destroy the fortress. His Reiatsu is blue. Prior to meeting Aizen, his spiritual power was unintentionally killing other Hollows just by being near them, even after splitting his spiritual energy.

Descorrer: A technique used by Espada-level Arrancar, and sometimes others, to open a Garganta between the Human World and Hueco Mundo. He uses one to travel to the Fake Karakura Town.

Cero:His Cero is blue in color. While a standard ability for Arrancar, Starrk's abilities with it are very unique. As noted by Shunsui, unlike other Arrancar, he can apparently fire a Cero without a "fighting pose", meaning he can fire it without any warning from body gestures. Starrk can charge and fire it rather quickly, leaving even less time for his target to react. He can fire his Cero from various points on his body, such as from either hand, his chin, and his chest.

Highly Perceptive Combatant:Starrk is very detail-oriented when it comes to fighting. He notices his opponent's mannerisms, and discerns the reasons behind those actions and the weaknesses and strengths of his opponent. He can look at unfamiliar attacks and figure out how they work by just viewing them once.

Feats:

"I've gone to the trouble of pulling out this damn release. I'm going to see your Bankai if I have to drag it out of you." (Starrk to Shunsui, Chapter 362)

Let me first say this as a foreword; Starkk has a very low amount of feats, due to his lack of appearance in the story in the FKT arc. As such both his pre and post release will be included here. Also the scans are manga style, so read right to left. Apologies if that inconveniences you.

Resurrección:

Los Lobos is Starrk's Resurreccion, activated with the command "Kick". Starrk's Resurreccion allows him to take on the form of a gunslinger, and amplifies his innate soul-splitting abilities to an excessive level.

Starrk explains how his wolves are created and states soul-splitting/manipulation is his true power, which is further backed by how he explains he and Lilynette are just two souls from the same body. Starrk uses this power to allow him to shoot as many Cero as he does with his vast reiatsu and soul manipulation, using Los Lobos to exemplify this ability.

Nothing overly impressive, but Starrk can summon Reishi Swords from the bandolier of his outfit, the swords are strong enough to easily go blow for blow with Shunsui's Katen Kyokotsu however.

Next in the latter half of Chapter 362, we see Cero Metralleta for the first time. Starrk uses his pistols to simultaneously unleash a powerful barrage of Ceros which, because of their density and grouping, appear to fuse together into one large Cero blast. He can change the direction of this attack while firing, making it extremely difficult to avoid. We will see this again and expand on it in the Speed section.

Next, first seen in Chapter 373 is the true power of Starkk's release, where he summons a pack of wolves due to his soul splitting and fuses with Lilynette fully during the process. From the get go, the wolves are large enough in numbers and power for Love and Rose to immediately don their Hollow masks They speak and think as one being.

Again seen in Chapter 373; the wolves are practically immune to blunt force damage and can regenerate and be re-summoned quickly and easily by Starrk.

In the same Chapter, we get an explanation of what the wolves are and how they work.

Starrk's wolves are Cero-based creatures that upon impact with an opponent cause massive explosionsThe wolves are immune to blunt force damage, and Starrk confirms they are stronger Ceros imbued with his own soul, making them powerful enough to seriously injure two captain-class opponents simultaneously. Had Shunsui not stepped in, Love and Rose would have most likely lost this fight. A testament to the power of Starkk's wolves.

Intellect:

Starrk's intellect is very undersold here and should be included for the reasoning that it was explicitly shown how well he deduces fighting styles and abilities. He was able to do this from two of the most powerful and hax Shinigami of Bleach in Shunsui and Ukitake.

First Chapter 335:

Starrk is quickly and quite easily able to discern Shunsui's fighting style just from crossing swords a few times. Shunsui remarks this as rather scary and decides to get a little more serious because of this.

Next Chapter 363:

From just testing it with 3 Cero shots, Starrk is able to deduce and figure out how Ukitake's Sogyo No Kotowari works and thinks of a way to counter it.

Finally Chapter 374:

From just experiencing and seeing each in action once, Starrk is able to deduce how Shunsui's Kageoni and Irooni work and counter Shunsui's use of them.

Physical Capabilities:

Each section will be separated into his base and Resurrection forms.

Strength:

Starrk has only one notable/legitimate strength feat, while in his Resurrección state.

From Chapter 372 we have Starrk block a blow from Love's Shikai Tengumaru. While Love does knock him away, you have to remember that Barragan had just died in the previous chapters and Starrk was the most affected of those present, so we can infer that Starrk was not trying to really overpower Love here but blocking it is still a good showing.

Now while this showing may not seem overly impressive, lets give some context to Love's own strength. As seen below in Chapter 315.8 or -101 of the TBTP arc:

While taking some damage, Love blocks a spiritually charges attack from the Hollowfied (and bloodlusted) Kensei with his unreleased Zanpakuto. Now a normal, base Kensei can throw Wonderweiss through several buildings as seen in Chapter 377. And his hollowfied state vastly increases his physical stats.

Bringing this back to Starrk now, Love was able to block a Hollowfied Kensei's strike albeit with some damage with an unreleased Zanpakuto and Starrk was able to block Love's released Zanpakuto. To conclude that makes it a decent showing of strength for Starrk.

Speed:

This is Starrk's most notable physical trait. Starrk is one of, if not arguably the fastest Espada outside of maybe Ulquiorra's Segunda Etapa state. Let's take a look.

Base/Pre-Resurrección:

One of Starrk best speed feats, and one that got people taking him seriously. From Chapter 313; Starrk travels from Las Noches, appears in front of Orihime, grabs her and vanishes before either Kenpachi or Ichigo can react regardless of his appearing between the two of them, and appears a vast distance away before Aizen all within what seems like two motions. It should also be noted that this is Starrk's casual speed considering his demeanor at the time.

From right to left Ch. 335 for dodging, then Ch. 355 for wounding Shunsui

Another solid showing of Starrk's speed in his base form in Chapter 335 & 355, was how casually he dodge swings from a semi-serious Shunsui. Mind you both were still massively holding back, but we can see Shunsui is still trying with strikes in the first panel, while in Chapter 355, Starrk is fast enough to still slightly wound Shunsui, even though he comments that Shunsui is dodging all of his strikes. Two things should still be noted here, Starrk hasn't been hit once yet, and is still holding back.

This makes Starkk's speed in base form at least on par with some the most powerful captains of the Gotei 13.

Resurrección:

Chapter 362 which showcases the debut of Starrk's Resurrección, and his possible increased speed. While distracted talking to Lilynette, Starrk dodges an opening deceptive blow from Kyoraku intended to kill him whilst being able to calmly comment on the change in behavior from Kyoraku. After being buffeted by Kageoni, Starrk immediately reacts to Kyoraku's Takaoni mid-air and hits him with a Cero, whilst keeping track of him even during his dodging of the attack.

The attack was enough to temporrily overwhelm Shunsui and forced Ukitake to step in with Sogyo No Kotowari. In fact it makes it even more impressive because Starrk dodges a reflected Cero of his own making, that Shunsui had difficulty avoiding

In Chapter 363 on the leftmost scan Starrk casually dodges a point-blank, blindside attack from a serious Shunsui. And the the succeeding chapter is fast enough to not only get to Shunsui before he can attack Wonderweiss, but also shoot him fast enough in that split-second before he could react. It should be noted that here in Chapter 364, Shunsui was momentarily bloodlusted due to WW nearly killing Ukitake.

Another good showing of Starrk's speed occurs in Chapter 372, where he reacts and dodges an attempted blitz from Love Aikawa. Again Starrk is casually dodging these blows, and Love and Rose are the third & fourth captain level Shinigami he has essentially soloed in a row.

A final showcase of Starrk's combat speed. We see in Chapter 374 two things. One Starrk reacts and dodges Shunsui's Kageoni after only having seen it in action once, and later blitzes Shunsui and slashes him from behind while playing Irooni. What makes this more impressive is the fact that Starrk had just taken this Kageoni and had no time to rest or heal.

Durability/Endurance:

Again Starkk does not have many showings in this area. This is due to the fact, that while in base form Starrk takes no damage and only received hits in his final hour Post-Resurrección.

Chapter 374: Starrk takes a point blank center mass Kageoni. What makes this impressive is that Starrk had his entire final fight with Shunsui in this state and still put up a great fight, only being truly defeated by his hax Katen Kyokotsu in the end.

Chapter 372: Starrk practically no sells a direct hit from Love's shikai, showing no outer damage and being more concerned that Barragan died. Again Starrk was not serious here and only took the hit because he was emotionally affected by the death Barragan, and the lack of response to it.

Conclusion: Respect the Primera

Coyote Starrk and by extension Lillynette Gingerbuck is a very powerful Vasto Lorde Arrancar and deserving of the top spot of the Espada. His spiritual presure alone is able to create a mountain of bodies from those who couldn't withstand it. And I hope I have shown you, depsite his limited feats that he is still a very powerful opponent and should not be taken lightly. It seems as though Starkk takes some hits due to his supposed easy "OHKO" from a Shikai Shunsui Kyoraku. However the fact is that Shunsui has one of the most hax Zanpakuto in all of Bleach and Starrk still practially soled him and three other captains until their final fight and spent most of the time not going all-out. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this RT! This is the first of the Espada Series, next up is Barragan!
