Each week we take a close look at a comic book collectible. That means taking it out of the package. With Captain America: The Winter Soldier now in theaters, we figured this was the perfect time to take a look at the Disney Store exclusive Marvel Select Winter Soldier action figure.

If you're familiar with the Marvel Select figures, you know they come in nice big packages. They're pretty detailed and come with a base. While they do have a lot of articulation, they don't necessarily have the most options for posing the figures.

If you're not fully familiar with the Winter Soldier's story or haven't checked out his page here on Comic Vine, the back of the package does give a little summary. And it's pretty cool they used the Lee Bermejo art from WINTER SOLDIER #4.

With the base, the figure makes a good display.

The base is pretty cool. Looks like a window was shot. Perhaps by Winter Soldier or someone else. You can see he comes with a couple guns that he can hold and there's also a third, hanging, that he can use as well.

It always seemed weird that Bucky still has a star on his arm. "Hey, there's this killer dude, called the Winter Soldier. He has a metal arm with a star on it." He's supposed to be dead and we know he's not the only one with a metal arm. But it is a cool little detail and looks nice on the figure.

Sometimes the base the Marvel Select figures come with are just okay. This one may not be anything out of the ordinary but I do think it adds a nice touch to the figure's look.

It's almost as if there's a story being told with this background. What mess did he get himself into this time?

It's always cool when a figure has a lot of detail on their back. Usually when figures are on display, you don't really see their backs. It's still a nice touch.

This figure does have kind of weird leg joints. It'd be cool if you could put him in a kneeling position but his legs knees don't quite bend that way. But you can put him in a slightly different stance.

And, of course, the figure is in scale with your other Marvel Select figures.

    Date night.

As mentioned, the figure is a Disney Store exclusive. You can order it directly from them HERE. It'll cost you $24.95 and they do a good job shipping the figure pretty quickly. If you're interested, you'd want to get it now before you end up having to buy it later at a higher price.

That's all we have for this week. Will we continue the Captain America theme for another week? Possibly. There are still other items to take a look at.

I don't buy many action figures anymore. Just don't have the room to display them. The Marvel Selects are sweet though. I'd really like to snag one of these.

Is this based on Howard Chaykin art? If it is artist specific that is pretty cool.

The design of the star kinda intrigues me. What they used in the movie made sense to me, because it's how I've always seen the star: red, five points, no surrounding field. An emblem of the Soviet Union. This toy, and Bermejo's cover on Winter Soldier #4, feature a star that looks like it was repainted to resemble Cap's shield, an indication that Bucky has changed allegiance. I haven't read Brubaker's Winter Soldier title (I will now, though), so I can hardly comment on issue-by-issue plot development, but looking at the covers there is no consistency in the star. On some covers it's the Soviet star, on others the American. This toy, with the Soviet ammo crate, Luger (?), and what looks at first glance like a Dragunov rifle, seems to be Cold-War era Winter Soldier. So are these artists choosing designs at random, or there a real contextual significance to the design? Feel free to enlighten me.

The reason for the different stars on his arm is because Bucky has actually had more than one bionic arm, each with their own distinct star on them. When he was under the control of the Soviets his arm had the red star that most are use to. But later on, after his memories were restored and he became a good guy again, Bucky was given a new, more improved bionic arm which has the star you see on on the toy posted above.

This action figure is based after the designed used on the first five issues of Winter Soldier (Vol.1). At the time of the series Bucky was using his new bionic arm which has the white star with blue and red outlining.

There's not really any significance to the star, as currently in All-New Invaders, Bucky's arm has a black star on it with red outlining. Personally I like the star design we see on the toy here, as like you said, because it looks like Cap's shield and is a subtle nod to his alliance with Captain America as well as the U.S.

@vitaeleous: I have that Winter Soldier run, the only time the star changed back to the soviet version was in the issues after Brubaker left the book, which is also when I stopped picking up the series. I'm not even sure that the change on the covers carried over to the interior art.

Comics-wise he's changed allegiances and had the americanized star for a while, since way back in '07 or '08, I believe.

So is anyone else getting a Bruce Campbell vibe from the figure? It could very easily be Ash from Army of Darkness with the robotic arm and the chin.
