Storm is a powerful, graceful, and beautiful dark skin Black woman. But when I see pictures like these
of a light skin "Storm" with Caucasian features this tells me; that people like those artists whom are responsible for these drawings, think that dark skin women CAN'T be powerful, graceful and beautiful. It bothers me on so many levels, the light washing and colorism of Storm.
I'm not Black. I'm Filipino. If someone were to change the facial features of a famous filipino character by giving them Hispanic features, I'd be offended. Because you're telling me that my people are ugly. That is why I can sympathize. But the thing that agitates me is when apologetics defend this type of colorism by saying things like "Storm is beyond her skin tone." Or "she can be any shade of color it still doesn't take away the fact that she's Black." I disagree. Storm's dark complexion has always been part of her appearance and not by accident. The same way it isn't an accident that Storm has become a beacon and symbol for women and not just women but dark skinned women for decades.
When you decide to change a character's complexion to fit your standard of beauty; you're not just erasing her color and ethnic features by giving her a lighter shade and Caucasian features e.g. small straight nose, smaller lips etc. You're also erasing what this character was intended to look-like; you're erasing what this character represents -- beautiful dark skin woman. And when you erase something that we have visually come to know it becomes unrecognizable. And Storm's face does not look recognizable.
