Hercules wanted revenge on Atlas for taking part in a brutal beating Hercules received.
At the end of the Titanomachy, Atlas was sentenced by Zeus to hold the heavens upon his shoulders, keeping them from touching the earth for all eternity. Since that time, Atlas has held the weight without any break or help except for the time Hercules took it from him for three hours while he gathered the Golden Apples of the Hesperides for Hercules. Once he'd obtained the apples, Atlas decided not to resume the burden of the heavens and told Hercules that he would bring the apples to King Eurysteus. Hercules agreed, but asked Atlas to take the heavens back long enough for him to pad his shoulders to make holding the weight more comfortable and bearable. Atlas then took the burden of the heavens back upon his shoulders and Hercules left with the apples. Atlas was angry at being tricked, but could do nothing about it because he was stuck with his burden. In modern times Atlas was again briefly relieved of his burden by Artume, the evil Queen of the Amazons, so he could get revenge against Hercules for tricking him in ancient times. However, Hercules defeated Atlas with help from Princess Namora of Atlantis and then stopped the master plan of Artume as well. Atlas again bears the burden of the heavans, and, presumably, always will.
