The Asgardian goddess Amora, also known as the Enchantress, used her sorcerous powers and feminine charms to take control of Hercules and use him against the Avengers. Once free of Amora's influence, Hercules aided the Avengers in thwarting her plans. Hercules then remained with the Avengers as an ally for a time until he eventually became an official member of the team. Hercules joined in The Avengers (1963) #38
Hercules was, perhaps, the pivotal factor determining the Champions formation as it was his enemy Pluto who attacked him while he prepared to give a seminar on Greek Gods and Myth at the UCLA campus. When Pluto's minions attacked Hercules, he was not alone in facing them. Fellow former Avenger the Black Widow, the Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze) and two former X-Men, Angel and Iceman were all in the vicinity and came to the aid of the endangered mortals and Hercules, too. Hercules and his newfound friends were able to eventually defeat Pluto, along with other Olympian threats like Ares and Hippolyta. The five of them then decided to stay together as a team of superpowered heroes/adventurers and called themselves "The Champions!" Unfortunatley, the team was short-lived in duration due to a lack of chemistry and cohesion amongst it's members. However, it was during their time as Champions that Hercules and the Black Widow began a passionate romance which lasted well after the team had disbanded.
Hercules became somewhat of a member of this esteemed assemblage when he attained power above that of all other godly sky-fathers. When Hercules was called before the Council they tried to assert command over him and were quick to receive something they rarely had; "The Gift of Battle."
Hercules is an Olympian god and superhero. He is an active member of The Avengers working for them in the capacity of instructor at the Avengers Academy. In the recent past, when he had seemingly lost his entire fortune, Hercules came to work for Damage Control who found his enormous strength quite useful in cleaning up wreckage from superhero/supervillain activities. Though Hercules is no longer employed by them, Damage Control could likely call upon Hercules to help them out again if the task required his might.
Was one of the several heroes lured by Dolar Bill's offer of being a member of the Defenders.

When the Superhero Civil War broke out over the Superhuman Registration Act, Hercules, feeling above mortal bureaucratic authority and more of a kinship with Captain America than with Iron Man, joined the resistance lead by Captain America and was, arguably their mightiest member. This loosely formed team was unofficially known as "The Secret Avengers."
Knowing of the Hulk's legitimate grievances with the powers-that-be on Earth and also feeling he owed the Green Goliath a debt of honor, Hercules chose to join with this small number of other heroes who understood the Hulk's position and sympathized with him. These heroes stood with the Hulk against the authorities and the other heroes at great personal risk despite all pleas, warnings and threats.
Hecules was recruited by Agent #33 and joined S.H.I.E.L.D to fight his brother Ares and his terrorist organization; the Warhawks. During his time of service Hercules was S.H.I.E.L.D. agent # 74.
Hercules was chosen by Athena, and reluctantly approved of by the Council of Godheads, to lead this force of immortals against the Skrull pantheon of gods during the Skrull Secret Invasion of Earth. This marked Hercules' first time as the leader of any superteam which he did with great success. Having ended the threat of the Skrull gods the God Squad disbanded. A short time later Hercules attained vast power; power beyond that of all the Sky-fathers on the Council of the Godheads. With his newly acquired omniscience Hercules immediately sensed the dire threat the Chaos King posed to all of reality. It was then that Hercules found it necessary to reform the God Squad, this time with more and different members, and to once again lead the God Squad into battle. There has only been two incarnations of the God Squad and Hercules was the leader of both.
